Curriculum
& Methods
The
educational program of Antilles Military Academy
fosters the attainment of lifelong principles of leadership,
patriotism, self-discipline, sense of responsibility, integrity,
loyalty, self-reliance, and self-esteem. Moreover, student’s
life and activities programs are carefully designed and organized
to ensure that the needs of students and expectations of the
school community are addressed effectively. They are based
on the philosophy, mission, vision and objectives of Antilles
Military Academy. Activities are geared towards providing
students with excellence in education and to enrich student’s
lives. Moreover, activities promote leadership, confidence
and tolerance among students.

Toddler through Kindergarten
Students receive a multidisciplinary and integrated curriculum
with the purpose of developing their abilities, skills, and
knowledge. Games are used as an essential means for the social,
physical, mental, moral and emotional process. New technology
is integrated through computers, videos, and educational games.
The curriculum promotes awareness of their physical health
and the need for children to take care of their body parts.
Educational experiences for social and cultural interactions
with teachers, peers, and parents are encouraged. Reading
and writing skills are introduced. The students find and form
the meaning of numbers through real experiences with the use
of charts. Participation in motion activities is encouraged
in a cooperative and competitive level amongst students in
an effort to develop their motor skills.

First
through Fourth Grade
In the elementary level, Science is developed in a manner
in which educational activities will motivate students to
use their natural curiosity through experimenting, exploring
and solving problems by using Life, Earth and Physical Science
in an integral approach. These skills are widely developed
by using hands-on experience in activities such as: Field
Trips, Science Fairs and through the use of computers. Tests,
portfolios, and assessment techniques are used as guidelines
for evaluation.
Social
Studies develop the students’ social and cultural skills
by fostering the acquisition of a basic knowledge of life
through the study of their surroundings, their community,
and their country. A basic introduction of the history of
the world is introduced in the fourth Grade. Activities to
develop and cultivate the awareness of these skills are highly
encouraged by the celebration of History Week, Puerto Rican
Week, Field Trips to museums, theaters, movies, plays, and
through the use of computers. Tests, portfolios, and other
forms of assessment are forms of evaluation.
Spanish
is our vernacular language and a window to communication.
The third grade starts with a program that emphasizes the
English language. Students are introduced in the writing and
reading skills so that they can express their knowledge and
feelings about the world that surrounds them through written
and oral communication,(essential for the construction of
words, phrases and sentences). The content is a continuation
of their lives at home, school community, nation, world and
the communication among themselves. The purpose of the English
course is to develop the oral and auditory skills, and the
recognition and usage of the vocabulary. This occurs in a
continuing process. Further reading, comprehension, and illustrative
descriptive skills are obtained by using children’s
literature and by introducing dialogues and short narration.
The math program offers a complete development in the basic
skills in conjunction with primary operations and graphics.
In addition, it includes math skills in whole numbers, decimals
and fractions. The physical education program promotes activities
to develop the student’s coordination and neuromuscular
skills. Music, Arts, and Computer classes are integrated into
this curriculum.

Fifth
through Eighth grade
English and Spanish courses are designed for the learning
of grammar and orthography, encouraging also the writing skills.
In addition, oral and silent reading skills, comprehensive
reading, oral and written communication. It also strengthens
morphology, syntax, and semantics increasing in this way their
vocabulary.
Mathematics teaches fractions, decimals, geometry, measuring
system, and basic operations; percentages and algebraic concepts
are introduced.
Social
Studies include different characteristics of The Old World,
The New World, and of America. It includes origins, localization,
government, social economics and cultural evolution. The History
and Geography of Puerto Rico, its politic, economic, and cultural
development is also studied.
In
Science, knowledge of the science concepts, understanding
science processes, development of attitudes, interests, and
appreciation of the surrounding world are emphasized. The
focus is in Earth Science, Physics, and the basic principles
of living things. The health class emphasizes the importance
of maintaining a healthy life-style that will help prevent
mental, emotional and physical sickness.
The
Physical Education program provides a variety of sport activities
such as basketball, volleyball, softball, track and field,
cross country, swimming, and physical efficiency to improve
the students’ physical conditions.
Music,
Arts, and Computer classes are integrated in this curriculum.

Ninth
through Twelfth grade
The
Spanish course includes literature of the Middle Ages, :Renaissance
and Baroque, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, and Realism (Europe,
Spain, Spanish America, and Puerto Rico), Modernism and Literature
of the Seventeenth Century. It also emphasizes morphology,
orthographic and semantic characteristics, encouraging linguistic
elements, and the good performance in the oral and written
speech. Continuous checking of the grammar and literary works,
literary analysis, literary theory, literary genre is essential
in these courses.
The
English Department offers the development of the basic grammar
and composition skills through the practice and use of the
English language leading towards fluency and correctness of
the basic language skills such as listening, speaking, reading,
and writing. It provides the opportunity to read and analyze
American Short Stories, poems, dramas, essays and biographies.
It helps the students to understand the important elements
of each genre and to develop the correct usage of the oral
and written language.
The
Algebra Course covers the fundamental operations and their
properties associated with solving problems with real numbers,
variables, equations, inequalities, exponents, products and
factors, graphs, algebraic expressions, and formulas. Geometry
teaches the basic concepts such as point, line, straight and
paroled lines, and planes. It uses demonstrations using postulates
and theorems. Other topics included are triangle congruence,
polygons, quadrilaterals, trapezoids, and circles. We also
offer Algebra 2 and Trigonometry.
The Science course covers Environmental Science, which includes
the study of how humans interact with their environment and
the major focus is solving environmental problems. The Science
Fair continues the development of the scientific process through
inquiry, investigations, and critical thinking. Biology studies
all the aspects concerning organisms, evolution, classification,
structure, reproduction, and ecological interaction among
other living things and the world that surrounds them. In
Chemistry, the students analyze the link between the Chemistry
of Science and the world they live in. Topics include the
physical description of the chemical behavior of matter, therefore
providing the opportunity to structure the course according
to the students needs to acquire more knowledge. Physics is
another science course, which emphasizes the conversion of
matter into energy.
The
Social Studies Department includes History of Puerto Rico,
World History, and History of the United States. It is designed
to develop understanding and interpretation of events occurred
in the past, as well as the development, causes, and effects
at short and long terms, and the impact of the historical
evolution in society with the use of the introduction to Social
Sciences.
The JROTC program is a cooperative effort on behalf of the
ARMY and host institution to provide secondary students opportunities
for their personal development. The mission of the JROTC is
to motivate young people to become better citizens. The JROTC
learning experiences are intended to be useful to students
in any future military or civilian career.
We
offer advance courses in English, Spanish and Mathematics
where the College Board evaluates and validates these courses
as credits in Universities. The use of computers in Science,
Mathematics and English is integrated and encouraged in these
curriculums.
Music,
Arts and Crafts, and Computer Classes are offered as elective
courses in this level.
Professors and students use the library as a rich and educational
resource.
